Boiler Repair - Fixing Stuck Circulator Pump
Просмотров 52 тыс.6 лет назад
Hi everyone, its Jim. In this DIY video I fix a stuck circulator pump on an oil boiler running a hydronic baseboard heating system. The boiler heats the water but the Taco circulator motor doesn't pump water to radiators. The motor was getting very hot so I knew it was getting power but was seized up. Electric motors are pretty tough, and the impeller can get jammed with sediment especially if ...
Restoring an old house: comparing old and new wood
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.6 лет назад
I'm restoring my historic 1840's Greek Revival home in upstate NY. I'm doing wood repair and I show you the difference between the kind of wood the house was built with and today's lumber. I'n many cases it is better to restore old boards cut from old growth timber than to replace them.

Upstate NY Garden 2016 - Just Planted
Просмотров 5768 лет назад
We just finished planting our garden this year. Its early June. The garden in about 30x30 feet and organized in rows. We will the whole thing in May and then let the rows go back to crabgrass and mow them. We space the plants closer than we are supposed to, but the garden works fine and we get far more than we need. We like the peppers close because they create nice attractive dense foliage cov...
How to Make Hoosic Valley Chicken Curry

This is the curry recipe we made for the HV P/T potluck. I learned this while abroad in Fiji and India. Recipe can curry meats and vegetables. It works without tomato paste. In that case use lemon juice to provide tart flavor in place of tomato paste. Good luck! Jim and Chris.

DIY How to Make a Colonial Cork Bulletin Board by Yourself
Просмотров 16 тыс.8 лет назад
This is a cork board I made to fit in the kitchen of our historic Greek Revival farmhouse. We are using it to organize school materials for our kids. As usual my DIY videos are not intended to advocate for a method, rather they document honestly what I did as I went and include the mistakes I make. Good luck on your project.

2014 Harvest Tour. Great garden year in upstate NY
Просмотров 7319 лет назад
Good upstate NY garden year. Our peppers and tomatoes did well. We had some leaf spot and other blight show up on the tomatoes but we controlled with antifungal early on and kept our tomatoes going. The key is to treat early, and focus on non-infected portions. I removed affected leaves early on because I thought it would help (and wanted pretty plants) but found after three seasons that that d...

    Hello, Thanks for the super video. I completed a woodshed myself after watching your video. My woodshed is 24' long and 4' wide. I also kept the roof 8' long cutting and turning the top around. This gave it a peak and about 3' overhang in front. I would show pic if I could. My son works at Menards and showed it to his boss. The picture appeared in the national Menards magazine going to employees. Pretty cool!

    Looks great, like the little side extensions. The only thing I see wrong is how close that giant inferno is to your house. First thing I would notice if I was doing an insurance inspection. Click, click, click goes the camera! Good thing it's just on blocks, makes it easier to move to a safer distance. Ask your broker what that distance is for your state and provider.😉

    My Taco 007 circulator is noisy as hell. No hot water no heat at baseboards. It's noisy because there's no water flowing through that line. Is my water tank clogged with sediment? When I cracked the valve near the circulator open, little to no water came out, and it was brown. And the circulator housing is VERY hot (since it's spinning but not lubricated by water)

    • @jyienger
      @jyienger 2 года назад

      Sounds like you have a water leak if your radiator lines are empty. There should be a pressure gauge in the boiler reading between 10-15 psi normally I think for radiator pressure. If that is zero, then you've lost water.

    I used your plan and built one myself last season. It has worked so well, I am starting a new one this weekend. Thank you for the design, very simple and sturdy. The price of lumber around here has pretty much doubled compared to last time. I should have built two the first time around. I wanted to see how well the design worked before I built two. No problems at all, keeps it dry all the time rain or snow. For those that are wondering how this compares to simple wood stack with tarp. The one I built is able to hold two cords of wood. I ordered four cords of wood and put two in this shed and the rest I stacked like I normally would next to it. All the wood in the shed was able to season below 20% moisture content as it allows air and flow from all side including the bottom. The stacked wood eventually seasoned but not as fast or as well. This alone is a good reason to build one.

    Installation looks very good for the small space. Use a FLIR gun to see where they missed and inject some close cell foam of the same product which they should had given you in a can form as well to fill in any heat losses. You went with the correct product it is SOY based which is highly recommended because it does not have those toxic off gasses.

    for DIY skills it's a great result .. two items are a bit kludgy ... 1} the foundation is a bit precarious (settling and torsion stress to the uprights) ... 2) it needs a rain gutter to direct water away from between the shed and whatever structure it's parallel to. Also, I don't get the ommision of continuing of the roof fully?

    • @jyienger
      @jyienger 4 года назад

      Good recommendations. I think the foundation has been fine so far. I got about an inch of settlement on one corner the first year. I just jacked it up and shimmed it with treated 1x lumber, and its been plumb and level ever since.
